The Food Bank is a leading advocate for effective government programs that assist people at risk of hunger. We also conduct cutting-edge research to determine the food needs of low-income residents in San Francisco and Marin, part of a comprehensive effort to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry.
Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for people who are food insecure to participate in the food assistance programs for which they are eligible. Our approach is simple: we identify challenges and opportunities in public food assistance programs, analyze the issues using a data-driven approach, develop and advocate for effective solutions, and monitor progress.
We all benefit when everyone has enough financial resources to buy food. That’s why the Food Bank advocates to make sure CalFresh (formerly “food stamps”) serves every eligible person in a way that is simple, seamless and integrated with other programs.

Local policy and funding are critical to ensuring that everyone has access to food. We work to assess the local food security landscape, prioritize solutions, and advocate for policies and local funding to support a diverse array of food assistance programs.
272 million meals: that’s the number of meals that are needed for the 249,000 people who are at risk of food insecurity in San Francisco and Marin Counties in one year. Though the nonprofit food assistance network provides 48 million of those meals needed, 38 million meals – or 14% of the meals needed – are still missing. Learn more about our cutting edge research and read our Missing Meals Report.
