Transforming Food Assistance in the City That Shaped Her: Irene’s Story
For Irene Garcia, the Bay Area isn’t just where she lives...
Read MoreCommunity Markets are a pilot initiative that offers grocery store-style spaces where participants can browse and select the foods that work best for their families. Open multiple days each week with extended hours; they make it easier for neighbors to get nutritious, culturally relevant foods.
Building on the strengths of community partners who are already providing integrated social services, Community Markets will pair access to nutritious food with vital support services. Participants will benefit from supportive programs directly available at a Partner-led Community Market, and at a Food Bank-led Community Market, participants will benefit from referrals to partner-offered social services and guidance from peer navigators, who are individuals with lived experiences of food insecurity that are serving as trained volunteers to lift up their community.
Community Markets aim to pair food access with the other services those organizations already provide, creating a seamless experience for participants; things like housing, employment resources, legal aid, etc. Over the next year, the Food Bank will open eight Community Markets across San Francisco and Marin, with a goal of serving up to 4,500 households each week within three years.
Help neighbors shop for fresh, culturally relevant foods in a grocery store-style setting. Volunteers assist with roles such as Greeter, Stocker, or Co-Shopper. Volunteers must be 11 years or older, and minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Peer Navigator Volunteers receive training from the Food Bank and use their own lived experience to help participants find and access local services, offering guidance and support at Community Markets. Applications are reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis.
