San Francisco-Marin Food Bank Expands Environmental Sustainability Efforts
Just as Diesel Gas Prices Continue to Soar
San Francisco, CA (June 8, 2026) – The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank is Going Green(er) by installing two new, on-site electric charging stations to power our five zero emission delivery trucks — two were just delivered. For the Food Bank, this means cleaner, cheaper, and more efficient operations to get healthy nutritious food to those in need, while also helping to reduce emissions in the communities we serve.
The Food Bank will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5 p.m., June 9, 2026, to underscore its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and the community. The event features remarks from San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, environmental leaders and San Francisco-Marin Food Bank’s Executive Director, Tanis Crosby.
The opening of these charging stations and addition of two new zero emission trucks couldn’t come at a better time. The Food Bank currently spends $28,000/month on diesel fuel; that’s up from our usual $19,000/month! The ZEV stations will power our current fleet of five electric delivery trucks – resulting in a cost saving of roughly $58,000/year. The Food Bank is also maximizing the payload space of its ZEVs by moving groceries from its diesel vehicles to the zero emission trucks to reduce fuel expenses.
“We center our participants in all of our decisions and that includes a cleaner environment and saving on fuel costs to focus more on our food programs and services,” said San Francisco-Marin Food Bank’s Executive Director. Tanis Crosby. “From partnering with farmers to bring fresh produce to our communities instead of healthy produce going to waste. From our warehouse solar panels and rescuing good but slightly imperfect food from grocery stores to the ribbon cutting for our electric vehicle charging stations. All of it is part of our commitment to energy savings, supporting the environment and doing what’s best for those we serve.”

ABOUT THE FOOD BANK
The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank’s mission is to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin counties. We envision a community free of the root causes of hunger, where everyone has access to nutritious food of their choosing and is uplifted by a network of support. Together with 265 community partners, we work to address hunger head-on through a coordinated network of neighborhood food pantries, CalFresh enrollment, home-delivered groceries, and policy and advocacy efforts. We work with our community to provide food for people facing hunger today while working to end the hunger of tomorrow. This past fiscal year, we served 44,000 households per week. More than 70% of what we distribute is fresh fruits and vegetables. To learn more, visit sfmfoodbank.org.
